Location Top

Mount Prospect is located about 20 miles northwest of Downtown Chicago and about 10 miles north of O’Hare International Airport. Mount Prospect is located west of the Des Plaines River and part of the suburban communities of Chicago.

Neighboring suburbs include Arlington Heights, Des Plaines, Rolling Meadows, Prospect Heights, Northbrook, Glenview, Schaumburg, and O’Hare.

Mount Prospect residents enjoy the convenience of well maintained local roads like US Route 12, US Route 14, and US Route 45. To the south of Mount Prospect is Interstate 90, and to the Northeast Tollway 294 provides a fast connection to Milwaukee and other parts of Chicago land.

The winner of the ninth season of American Idol, Lee DeWyze was born and raised in Mount Prospect.

Ian Brennan was raised in Mount Prospect, and he went on to co-write and create the hit TV show Glee, inspired by his experiences as a member of Show Choir when he attended Prospect High School.


History Top

Previous to Black Hawk War, the Potawatomi tribe inhabited the land now known as Mount Prospect. After the 1833 treaty with the Potawatomi tribe, settlers moved into the Chicagoland area, but by 1850, the people settled in Mount Prospect moved on to go farther West.

The second group of settlers to arrive in Mount Prospect were German immigrants. When train began to be built in the surround areas of Chicago, Mount Prospect farming and agriculture flourished. Ezra Eggleston began planning the construction of a train station and gave Mount Prospects its name.

With the addition of a train station, businesses were established, and by 1917, the population of Mount Prospect reached 300 and became officially incorporated as a village.

Today, the population of Mount Prospect has grown to over 50,000 residents. The middle-class suburb of Chicago attracts more people each year for its comfortable, safe, and family-friendly community. Furthermore, Mount Prospect has grown out of a farming community and many business offices provide good employment opportunities.

Public transportation within Mount Prospect is maintained by Pace Bus services. Pace Bus Route 694 - Central Road-Mt. Prospect Station offers fast and convenient service to the Metra station Monday through Friday.

Pace Bus Route 221 - Wolf Road and Pace Bus Route 223 - Elk Grove - Rosemont CTA Station offer connection from Mount Prospect to the CTA Blue Line Rosement Train station.

Pace Bus Route 234 - Wheeling - Des Plaines offers stops along the Union Pacific - Northwest Metra train line for fast connection between the different stations.

For connection from Mount Prospect, Des Plaines Metra stations, and Jefferson Park Blue Line Station, Pace Bus Route 226 - Oakton Street offers plenty of service stop Monday through Friday.

Nightlife Top

Mount Prospect offers fun and relaxing nightlife like most suburban communities. Most bars and pubs in Mount Prospect are relaxed and casual but a few of the bars are night clubs with dancing.

Dick’s River Roadhouse has great daily drink specials that draws in large crowds during the week and a menu that includes 13 different flavored hot wings. Also different from most traditional bar menu, a breakfast menu is included and served all day. Also try the deep fried Twinkies. For the best late night bar and live music, Blues Bar provides live blues music and themes their decor after the Blue Brothers. Local favorite on the menu is the pulled pork sandwich with Bourbon sauce. Karaoke Pub Nina is one spot in Mount Prospect that you can’t find in every suburban community. With a stage and a huge selection of karaoke songs and comfy lounge chairs, Nina’s is a fun and relaxing night out that attracts mainly an older crowd but its good for groups. Entertainment Top

Randhurst Shopping Mall has long been an important part of Mount Prospect shopping. The mall is currently closed and being renovated as an outdoor shopping center in Spring 2011. Currently some stores do remain open; Borders Books Music & Cafe, Bed Bath & Beyond, Carson Pirie Scott, and Home Depot.

Also at the Randhurst Shopping Mall is the AMC Randhurst 16 Movie Theater. For the best new release films, this AMC theater also has the traditional concession stand with buttery popcorn, candy, soft drinks, soft pretzels, and cheesy nachos. Some movies here are offered in RealD 3D.

Located in the neighboring community of Arlington Heights, the Metropolis Performing Arts Theater provides local live theater productions, drama school, music school, and dance school  in the Northwest suburbs. Recent productions of famous stories like the Diary of Anne Frank, Wizard of Oz, or Pinocchio have been reviewed as delightful, entertaining, and fun for the whole family.

Mount Prospect restaurants and dining offer a variety and many high quality without the long trip to downtown Chicago. Many of the restaurants have delicious dinner menus, full bars, outdoor patios, and live music entertainment.

For the best steak and sushi in one place, Kampai Japanese Steak House and Sushi Bar is a great dining spot in Mount Prospect. Recommendations off the menu include everything from the spicy scallop, golden shrimp, chicken teriyaki, and known best for its egg yolk sauce that is delicious and melts in your mouth. Jameson’s Charhouse has one of the largest menus filled with wines, steaks, pasta, kabobs, and entrees for every appetite. The Charhouse only uses the freshest ingredients for all of their menu items, including the delicious and healthy salads. For the best Thai food in the northwest suburbs, Pad Thai Restaurant is favorite among the Mount Prospect community and surrounding area. Salerno’s Pizzeria is one of Mount Prospects many pizzeria's and offers some of the best thin and thick crust pizzas with plenty of specialty toppings that include the Pizza Prosciutto or the Pizza Venenzia or speciality pasta like stuffed shells. Festivals/Parks Top

Mount Prospect hosts two festivals a year. The Mount Prospect Lions Club Festival takes place during the 4th of July weekend and features a car show, carnival rides, bake sale, beer garden, fireworks display, 4th of July Parade, games, food, and plenty of family-friendly fun. The festival is a favorite family outing for Mount Prospect residents of all ages.

The second Mount Prospect festival is the Mount Prospect Arts Fest and Blues on the Green. For one weekend in June, the festival brings some of the best local Blues music to the community and alongside the live Blues music is the fine arts festival. At the fine art festival, local artists sell their paintings, jewelry, photography, sculptures, and other works of art.

Mount Prospect parks and bike trails are maintained by both the Mount Prospect Park District and the River Trails Park District. Both park districts operate community pools, athletic associations, ice rinks, fitness centers, sledding hills, and much more.
